Château Lamartine is a historic family estate of the Cahors AOC, located at Soturac on the oldest terraces of the Lot Valley, at the extreme west of the appellation. Property of the Gayraud family since 1883, the estate spans four generations and embodies a classic and rigorous approach to Cahors, based on plot selection of old vines and careful vinification.
For general context, see our complete Cahors AOC guide and our article on Cahors AOC blending.
Terroir and vineyard
The estate covers 37 hectares planted on the oldest terraces of the Lot Valley, south-facing, ensuring optimal Malbec ripeness (Côt locally). Soils fall into three families:
- Clay-limestone (50%) — structure and matter
- Limestone (30%) — freshness and minerality
- Clay-siliceous (20%) — vivacity and fruit
Malbec (Côt) forms the backbone of the planting, complemented by small proportions of Merlot and Tannat on entry-level and mid-range cuvées. Cuvée Particulière and L'Expression are 100% Malbec, pure expression of Cahors's emblematic grape.
See our Causse vs Lot Valley comparison for the context of alluvial terraces.
The Gayraud family — four generations
The estate has been carried by the Gayraud family since 1883. Alain and Brigitte Gayraud led the vineyard for several decades before the 2016 transmission to their children Lise and Benjamin, who today represent the fourth generation. Annual production sits around 200,000 bottles, shared between French markets and export (USA, UK, Belgium mainly).
This family continuity is one of the estate's strong assets: terroir memory, fine knowledge of the plots and house style pass without rupture.
Flagship cuvées
Tradition
Accessible entry-level cuvée, Malbec-dominant + Merlot blend. Fruity profile, supple tannins, mostly vat ageing. Wine of immediate pleasure, to drink within 4–6 years. The ideal introduction to the Lamartine style.
Pairing: charcuterie, white meats, young magret, regional South-West dishes.
L'Expression
100% Malbec cuvée from the best-exposed plots of the old Lot terraces. Careful vinification, mixed vat-and-oak ageing depending on vintage. Pure expression of Malbec without oak dominance, precise black fruit, balanced structure. Cellaring 8–12 years.
Pairing: duck confit, Quercy lamb, feathered game, mature cheeses.
Cuvée Particulière
The estate's prestige cuvée. Plot selection from 40 to 70 year-old vines, planted on the estate's most typical soils. Long ageing, balanced profile, silky tannins, very long finish. Excellent value for this level of complexity.
⚠️ Canon note: do not confuse Lamartine's "Cuvée Particulière" with the homonymous one at Château La Caminade — always specify the estate in any written mention (see SEO_PLAYBOOK §6.4-bis).
Pairing: authentic cassoulet, game (roe deer, wild boar), mature cheeses (Rocamadour, Bleu des Causses), slow-cooked dishes. See our Cahors / game article.
To note for the wine lover
- Geographic position: Soturac being at the extreme west of the AOC, the vintage may differ slightly from estates further east (Caillac, Mercuès) — generally slightly earlier ripening. See our vintage guide.
- House style: Lamartine assumes a classic style without seeking maximum modernity. The estate is not biodynamic but tends to its plots with rigour. For lovers of more "new-wave" profiles, see Mas del Périé or Le Clos d'un Jour.
- Availability: 200,000-bottle production well distributed — Lamartine is easy to find at French South-West specialist wine merchants. Cuvée Particulière: one of the best value AOC propositions at this level.
